High Altitude Tips
Remember that travelling to high altitudes may take
some adjustment. Drink plenty of liquids, restrict vigorous activity
until you are acclimatized, try to reduce your alcohol and caffeine
intake for the first 2 days. Altitude illness will spoil a trip,
causing amongst other things, headache, nausea, and difficulty breathing.
If you have had problems before in travelling to high altitude,
consult your doctor about a prescription for Diamox, Even if you
have been to altitude before it does not mean you can do it again,
I know one guy, he had been trekking in the Himalaya four times
and had no problems, but he had to give up on Mt. Kilimanjaro, not
because it was hard or anything, it was just the altitude sickness,
believe me it is not only terrible it can be fatal.
Always carry a roll of tissue paper in your backpack. Not all toilets
are equipped with this very essential item, in fact not all places
have toilets.
Always carry a good water bottle, to keep your water cool in hot
weather or the hot sun, wrap the bottle in a damp cloth. It's something
to do with evaporation that does it.
Your backpack should be as empty as possible, when going to high
altitudes only take the barest of necessities.
Always consider the layer system of dressing, it is far easier to
keep a comfortable temperature when wearing three or four T-Shirts
than wearing one thick sweater.
Never go without your sunblock, the sun at altitude is far stronger
than at sea level.
A good skin moisturizer is a necessity, the air is usually very
dry
Always take a lip moisturizer/Lypsil, preferably with a sun block
included, this will prevent chapped and blistered lips.
For the ladies, don't forget Tampons/Sanitary napkins.
Depending where and what time of the year, you may need a good quality
Down jacket, these are far superior to anything else on the market.
