I always stay at Hostels or Youth Association places if possible, apart from being cheap you usually meet fellow travelers who also are trying to cover as much ground as possible for as little as possible. These are the people to get your GOOD information off. The info you can get off these guys is the most up to date it is possible to get. I was a member of the YHA (Youth Hostels Association) back in England, I must say it saved me a small fortune in Africa. Most of the hostels also do good deals in travel, or will at least know where the best deals are to be had. I always found the food to be first rate and the general cleanliness of a good standard.
If ever you get the chance, go to Moshi YHA in Tanzania. It is situated facing Mt. Killimanjaro and when the sun goes down the colors on the snow capped mountain are something you will remember for life.
