Youth Hostels and other Accommodation

The accommodation in Québec City is perfect for budget travellers. In the Vieux-Québec quarter there are three youth hostels, and the budget hotels are as well located as those at the top end. However, the city is one of Canada's most frequented tourist destinations, so try to reserve in advance, particularly during the summer months and the Carnaval in February. Even at those times, though, you're not likely to find the city completely full, as the suburbs have masses of motels, all of them just a local bus ride away.

The hotels in Vieux-Québec are usually renovated town houses with the rooms fitted to provide a variety of accommodation. For cheaper rooms, in category up to $40, head for the area around rues St-Louis and Ste-Ursule, streets that are lined with budget hotels; the posher places are around the Jardin des Gouverneurs in the shadow of the prestigious Château Frontenac and in the Latin Quarter. In Basse-Ville, hotel accommodation is surprisingly more expensive and options are limited to a couple of special places mentioned herein or a mass of run-of-the-mill motels.

All of Québec City's campgrounds are around 20km outside town, which means they are only convenient for those with their own transport; the ones recommended herein are the closest

Hostels

Auberge de la Paix, 31 Rue Couillard (694-0735). Situated in the Latin Quarter, this is by far the best hostel in Québec City. Bike rental is available, and the rate includes breakfast. Up to $40.

The official youth hostel, located in a former boarding school, is often full and is very impersonal, though it offers laundry facilities, bike rental, luggage lockers and tourist information. Curfew is 11pm and discounts are offered in winter. Up to $40.

Motel Doyon, 1215 Rue Ste-Foy (527-4408). One of the cheapest motels around, in the University suburb of Ste-Foy. Basic but clean, with free parking. 10min bus ride to Vieux-Québec. Up to $40.

Services des Residences de l'Université Laval, Pavillion Alphonse-Marie-Parent, Room 1643, Cité Universitaire, Ste-Foy (656-5632). Single and double rooms are available in the student residences, a ten-minute bus ride from Haute-Ville. Early May to mid-Aug. Up to $40.

YWCA, 855 av Holland (683-2155, fax 663-5526). Chiefly for women only, though couples are allowed in the summer. Located just off chemin St-Louis, about a 15min bus ride from the Old Town. $40-60.

Campsites

Camping Aéroport, 2050 Route de l'Aéroport (871-1574, fax 877-0739). Take exit 305 off Hwy 440 onto Route de l'Aeroport - the campsite is around 5km north of the airport. $18 for a party of four.
