Youth Hostels
and other Accommodation
The accommodation in Québec City is perfect for budget
travellers. In the Vieux-Québec quarter there are three youth hostels,
and the budget hotels are as well located as those at the top end. However,
the city is one of Canada's most frequented tourist destinations, so try
to reserve in advance, particularly during the summer months and the Carnaval
in February. Even at those times, though, you're not likely to find the
city completely full, as the suburbs have masses of motels, all of them
just a local bus ride away.
The hotels in Vieux-Québec are usually renovated town
houses with the rooms fitted to provide a variety of accommodation. For
cheaper rooms, in category up to $40, head for the area around rues St-Louis
and Ste-Ursule, streets that are lined with budget hotels; the posher
places are around the Jardin des Gouverneurs in the shadow of the prestigious
Château Frontenac and in the Latin Quarter. In Basse-Ville, hotel accommodation
is surprisingly more expensive and options are limited to a couple of
special places mentioned herein or a mass of run-of-the-mill motels.
All of Québec City's campgrounds are around 20km outside
town, which means they are only convenient for those with their own transport;
the ones recommended herein are the closest
