Student Cards
In numerous countries, any attraction that is
remotely educational (such as museums, historic sites, archeological
digs and cultural/heritage centers ) have reduced prices for students.
But to be eligible for these reduced
prices you need to prove that you are a student. Unfortunately
(for most non students) the only way to do this is to show your
student ID card,
A lot of colleges and universities have their own ID cards, also,
unfortunately these are not sufficient, you need to buy an intentionally
recognized ID card. The most common type of student ID card is
the ISIC or International Student Identity Card, this is accepted
in most countries and is carried by millions of students world
wide. Officially endorsed by national governments, international
organizations and student organizations, the ISIC can get you
reductions in transportation, accommodation, restaurants and also
at some retail shops,
throughout the world. Teachers can also get a travel ID card (called
ITIC) that offers similar savings.
Always ask for student reductions, many places do not give them
unless first asked for.
Your ISIC card can also provide you with basic medical coverage
and allows you access to a 24-hour help line for a range of emergencies,
medical, legal, and financial services, including locating a doctor
or lawyer.
To get an ISIC card you are have to be a full-time student and
older than 12 years of age, BUT on the Travel
Cuts page it states
"Not a Full-time student?
Non-students and part-time students, 25 years or younger,
are still eligible for many of the ISIC discounts with the International
Youth Travel Card. Full-Time teaching professionals can also receive
discounts with The International Teacher Identity Card. Ask for
details at your local Travel
CUTS/Voyages Campus office.;
This is well worth checking out.
You can purchase your ISIC card at most university and college campuses, Travel CUTS (order forms online) and Council Travel.
At around $16.00 US, an ISIC card could save you this many times over.
Don't forget...while you are traveling, ask about student discounts
BEFORE you pay.
Youth Hostel Membership
There are thousands of youth hostels around the world offering
accommodations at a bargain (in most countries you don't even
have to be a youth to sleep in these hostels). Although not all
hostels belong to the International Youth Hostelling Federation
(IYHF), it is still wise to get an HI membership so you can call
ahead to reserve a bed and get cheaper rates. Known as Hostelling
International (HI) and Youth Hostelling International (YHI), HI
and YHI
are run by the national Youth Hostel Association under the auspices
of the IYHF. Look for the tree and hut in the triangle (pictured
right) to find an IYHF hostel. Visit our hostels page for more details
on hostels.
