Flight Deals

Many airlines offer cheap flight opportunities specifically for student travelers. They can do this for several reasons:
  • students often have flexible schedules and are able to take off-peak flights,
  • their budget usually means that they are willing to fly stand-by, to get a great deal,
  • last but not least, by providing young travelers with cheap flights they are hoping to create a brand loyalty, and they will continue to use the same airlines in the future.

Flight deals for students can be found at the following organizations:
  • AirTran Airways - offers the X-Fares Standby Program for passengers aged 18 to 22. Young people can fly standby to any AirTran destinations for around $45 per segment (plus airport charges). Participants go to the AirTran ticket counter to put their name on the standby list, then go to their flight's gate. If there's a coach seat available after the final boarding call, they get it.
  • College Travel Network - set up by United Airlines, this web-based program is aimed at college students and offers student discounts and a special frequent flyer program. Other features include a search engine that scans 500 airlines for the lowest student fares, fare specials from United and a wealth of useful planning resources.
  • TWA allows you to purchase a Youth Travel Pak if you are between the ages of 14 and 24. Each one contains four coupons, each redeemable for one-way travel between any two cities served by TWA or Trans World Express within the continental U.S. or between the continental U.S., San Juan, Montego Bay, Santo Domingo, and Toronto, Canada. The price? Just $548 per pak. That's a mere $137 per flight. TWA's Youth Travel Pak also includes a Europe Bonus Certificate redeemable for 20% off any qualifying published adult fare.

  • Train Passes

Many international train services offer students rates. Eurail Youthpass: offer discount passes for travelers under the age of 26 called the Youthpass and Youth Flexipass. Just make sure you won't be turning 26 before you validate your pass.
This is the best way to get around Europe.

For seniors Eurail Senior passes: are a superb deal, offering large discounts and comfortable travel. Visit our Transportation page for more on rail travel.
